Lots of Heart

While we have been moving house, traveling, preparing for a new exhibition at work, and hosting guests, I have had a very hard time trying to exercise and eat healthy. I'm trying to get back into a routine and it has been hard. I don't have very many excuses left, so I need to get my act together.

On a more positive note, I received good news about my heart. It turns out that I have a trivial amount of aortic valve regurgitation which is causing my heart murmur. My doctor seemed unconcerned about it right now, which is great news! In order to help prevent this from getting worse, the Mayo Clinic suggests the following prevention tips:

  • Control high blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure reduces the strain on your aortic valve.
  • Consume less salt. Cutting back on salt in your diet helps you maintain your blood pressure within a normal range, which is important if you have aortic valve regurgitation.
  • Maintain a healthy weight. Keep your weight within a range recommended by your doctor. Extra weight makes extra work for your heart.
  • Exercise. Follow an exercise program within guidelines recommended by your doctor. Exercise itself does not fix aortic valve regurgitation, but it can help to lower your blood pressure. Exercise also helps maintain your general fitness, which will help with your recovery if you need heart surgery.
So now I have no excuses about not eating healthy and exercise because some day my heart just may thank me :)
